It's less about sharing consciousness and more that, unless everyone is standing on the same ground, the view each person sees ends up completely different, I think. Once you're up on it, the differences in eye level that come from height — those can't be helped. But the height needed to see over the wall in front of you, that one I feel has to be kept level. If it isn't, you end up split between the people looking at the wall and the people who can see past it.
And I think the good thing about the ground is that even when the members change, as long as it stays in place, whoever comes next can see the other side too.
