I woke up to news that another Black man was found hanging from a tree in Raleigh, North Carolina with local police calling it a suicide the same day. It feels like we are waking up to another lynching in another city across the American South over and over again: Javion Magee, Dennoriss Richardson, Earl Smith, Demartravion Reed, Kyle Bassinga, Juliana Nzita, To’Nea Nicole Miller, Jerard Jackson. It is something I did not think I would witness in my lifetime; I didn’t think twenty years ago that our country still had the capacity for this. After all we learned from the civil rights movement, the progress proved false, merely a superficial calm, an illusion of growth, and the suppression of dissenting voices. So here we are. Ida B. Wells’ spirit is weeping. Sad, disappointed, but not surprised. She stands alongside our ancestors and elders who knew that the capacity for violence never truly left our land.

The same reason racist white people have become emboldened is the same reason why the very power we need to investigate these hate crimes, our federal government, will do nothing about them. The Trump administration is rooted in white supremacy, and any civil rights protections Black people once had have now been redirected to support the whims of a white racist populace. That sort of rewrite of history is evident in the clemency granted for 1,500 January 6th defendants or lawsuits by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission accusing employment reverse discrimination against white men. The current administration certainly learned from the civil rights movement, understanding how the federal government intervened in states’ reign of terror during the 1960s. Think of the picture of Ruby Bridges being marched into class flanked by U.S. Marshals.

This is not lost on the people committing these crimes. They know that no one, neither their local racist governance nor the federal government, is coming to look for them. They also know their time is limited: do it now before the administration changes. They hope that any trace of their involvement will vanish by the time someone in official power gets around to investigating. We all know from the famous television show that the first 48 hours are essential to solving a murder. Those hours have come and long gone for each of these precious lives. The best evidence we have at the moment is the assertion by Black voices throughout this country from actors like Viola Davis, influencers like Deanté Kyle to academics like Dr. Stacey Patton and Dr. Michael H. Forde: Black people do not hang themselves from trees. The Equal Justice Initiative says over 4,400 race-based lynchings occurred in the United States between 1877 and 1950; 4,075 happened in Southern states. This is not lost on Black people. The reality is clear, but speaking out feels like screaming into a social media void that only echoes our own voices back to us.

This sense of dread brings me emotionally back to the days before Trump was elected. It became clear to me then that my more leftist friends had decided, out of moral conviction, that they could not vote for Kamala Harris. The lack of action to protect the people of Palestine meant she was not worthy of their vote; it was simply more of the same. What’s the difference? We need revolution. Let the empire fall.

I agree with these assertions in theory. I am angry and heartbroken at the genocide occurring to this day, especially the way the United States looked away during October of 2023. The United States vetoed multiple UN resolutions for cease-fire. In December of the same year, the Biden administration pumped more money into Israel, even bypassing Congress for emergency arms sales. We need accountability. There must be action. The plantation-capitalist system will never serve everyone fairly and must be dismantled for true equity to exist. Big money in elections has corrupted our politics, and so many candidates are bought and sold by the wealthy few under the lie that they act on behalf of “corporations made up of the people.” I know all these things to be true.

Yet right before the 2024 election, a heavy grief settled over me, a grief that felt ancient and modern at the same time, that bridged the years between 1619 and that day. I realized that the impossible was possible again: Trump could win. My anger at my leftist friends softened into pure hurt and grief, finally reaching the primary emotion beneath the anger. I no longer needed to be angry with them for following their conscience. How do you vote for a politician with blood on their hands, even against a more bloodthirsty opponent? We are all exhausted from choosing the lesser of evils.

But here is what I knew, what that feeling of grief felt in my bones told me: a Trump victory is not just “more of the same.” The evil of white supremacy has already been unmasked. Now it will empower more bad actors to act out their whims wherever conservative governments hold power. And I knew that the sacrifice placed on the altar of a clean conscience would be Black bodies. That has been the bargain in the United States over and over again. At the very founding of this country, men who knew slavery was wrong decided that unifying the new nation was the higher goal. A nation built out of anger of having to pay taxes on stolen land and calling it tyranny. You can go back to the writing of the Declaration of Independence, when Thomas Jefferson was ordered to take out the clause on the evils of slavery. The Three-Fifths Compromise gave enslavers more political power robbed from the enslaved. The fugitive slave laws made it illegal to help an enslaved person on free land — your conscience did not outweigh the property rights of white men. The Scottsboro Boys, accused of a crime they didn’t commit, were thrown to the angry mobs to assuage their hunger for vindication and white domination of the races. The lynchings, too numerous to list out individually on this page. Black bodies were the original sacrifice in America, and they remain so today.

I do not want to overlook how Brown bodies are placed on that same altar, as ICE raids continue to wreak havoc and people suffer and die in detention centers. The ACLU reports that deaths occur at a rate of roughly one every six days in ICE detention centers. But this reality exists because our foundational system was built upon the subjugation of enslaved Africans, creating a permanent ruling class designed to expand political power and feed the moneymaking machine.

The sadness and dread I feel centers on the realization that whether we are on the road to a people’s revolution or the collapse of an empire, the outcome remains rigged. Because our entire political systems were built directly over the fault lines of the original slave states versus free states, those red areas on the map do not merely represent the modern-day GOP. The well-documented Southern Strategy was written about as early as 1969 by Kevin Phillips, explaining how the Republican party would emerge over the following decades. From George Wallace saying in 1958 after a defeat for Alabama governor, “I was out-niggered by John Patterson, and I will never be out-niggered again”, to the congressional defection of Strom Thurmond from Democrat to Republican directly after the 1964 Civil Rights Act was passed. That red on our political maps represents the Black blood that continues to be spilled — and will continue to be spilled — as the bloodthirsty false god of white supremacy, like the biblical Baal, accepts its offerings unfettered and unbothered. The link between politicians using white animosity toward Black bodies for political gain is crystal clear.

For myself, as a Black person who grew up on Dynamite Hill in Birmingham, Alabama, who knows the four little girls killed in the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church bombing as friends of my older siblings and neighbors of my parents, who has been in the homes that were bombed, I know first-hand the sacrifices of apathy. If we are to change things, we have to vote and use the political system we have until we can get power to change it fundamentally. The goal must be as strategic as the ones used to disenfranchise us. Staying home on election day is not an option for me. The choice between Harris and Trump would not have brought revolution, but it would have saved actual lives as we fight to create more substantive change. The life taken could be your friend or neighbor instead of a distant video on your social feed. I hope we all remember that this fall and in 2028.

That comment has one job. Occupy the space where fact-checking would sit, long enough for a scroller to see a “debate.”

Here is the record on the mountain. Alaska petitioned to rename McKinley in 1975. Ohio blocked the petition for forty years. In 2015, Interior Secretary Sally Jewell moved it under 43 U.S.C. § 364, on federal land, at the state’s request, through the same Board on Geographic Names statute that resolves this kind of naming dispute every year. One rename in eight years. At a state’s request. Through statute.

Since January 2025: Denali reversed by executive order. Gulf of Mexico renamed. Seven Army bases renamed back to their Confederate namings. The Defense Department renamed to the Department of War. Lake Ontario renamed Lake America. The president has floated an ocean too.

Before I get to my own thread

Here is what I felt when I saw the comment.

Recognition. I have watched this shape work on people I love for years. Marines I served with. Family members. Students. None of them are gullible. The instrument is built to reach past the parts of us that check. Our bias.

You see the six words go by and you know the friend who commented is not going to Google Denali. You know the friend who posted the meme is going to read the comment and feel the ground shift a little. Facts are heavy. Comparisons are light. The comment is designed to be lighter than the thing it wants to displace.

That is the feeling. Recognition, and the quiet knowledge of what comes next. In the Corps, when the same shape keeps working, you give it a name, a rule of thumb. You teach the next Marine to see it. You write it down.

The same shape, one thread over

Two days later, a comment landed on my own Facebook post. Different subject, same shape:

Obama FIRED 197 officers, all the way down to O-4s, same pattern, all male, all conservative, all non-woke, all republicans.

I asked for a source. What came back was “There’s this thing called Google...” I chuckled. A different commenter jumped in: “are you too stupid to refute it yourself with intelligence.” I chuckled again. A third: “every president removes commanders.” I laughed out loud…not like this!

Three variants of one motive. None defended the specific claim. All did the same work as the mountain comment. Occupy the space where the current record would go.

Where 197 comes from

The number traces to a 2013 Breitbart Facebook post. Retired Major General Paul Vallely — a birther who told a Tea Party group in January 2014 that if given 250,000 Marines he would “surround the White House” — reposted the list on his Stand Up America site. An unsigned Investor’s Business Daily editorial published it on October 29, 2013, and updated the same file on December 21, 2018.

Every one of those essays exists because the writer knew that without the record, the equivalence would erase what happened. The record is the anti-equivalence. The instrument is trying to make you not see the record.

The instrument

The instrument is equivalence. Act-for-act comparison, whether the acts share the same mechanism or only the same category label.

Twenty-three years in the Marine Corps taught me one thing about categorical language. A verbal counseling is not an Article 15. An Article 15 is not a court-martial. A DUI is not a mission failure. Two events with the same category word attached are not the same event. The corps ran on precise distinctions because the alternative was giving the wrong order to the wrong person.

Here is the boundary test. Includes: comparisons where the acts share the same mechanism, scale, procedure, and record. Excludes: comparisons where the acts share only the category label.

One rename at a state’s request through statute equals dozens by executive assertion. One misconduct dismissal equals a demographic pattern. One 1996 board instruction equals officer removals for a fifteen-year-old academic paper. The comparison does not have to hold. It has to appear.

What is settled

On Friday, August 21, 2026, the Department of Defense issued separation notices to three people at the Stars and Stripes newspaper. Erik Slavin, editor-in-chief. Max D. Lederer Jr., publisher. Lara Korte, Middle East reporter.

The stated charge on Slavin's and Korte's paperwork was insubordination. Neither had refused an order. The "insubordination" was appearing on the CBS Sunday Morning segment "The Battle over Stars and Stripes," which aired on July 5, 2026.

On camera, Slavin said this: “Don’t run a perfectly accurate story, run this instead. Here it is, written by the Pentagon. That would be a red line.”

Korte said this: “I’m working for Stars and Stripes, not for the Pentagon, not for any administration, not for any policymaker. I’m here to cover the military community.”

A separate suit filed on June 3 by two outside editors, Suki Dardarian and Bill Church, was already pending against the Department, Secretary Pete Hegseth, Deputy Secretary Steve Feinberg, and Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell.

Mauldin stood in Patton’s office while a four-star general, the man who had commanded the invasion of Sicily and the drive across France, told a 23-year-old sergeant to stop drawing the cartoon that soldiers turned to first when the paper arrived.

Mauldin did not stop.

He did not stop because General Dwight D. Eisenhower, who commanded Patton, had already issued the order that made the meeting unwinnable for the general. Eisenhower had directed that officers were prohibited from interfering with Mauldin’s cartoons or with other controversial materials in the army newspaper. “Mauldin draws what Mauldin wants,” Eisenhower said.

I did not try to grade whether the writers were right. I was grading one thing: does the piece give you anything you can check?

Primary documents. Named scholarship. Data with a pollster and field dates. Reporting you can follow to its source. Or nothing.

The pattern that came back shocked me, and the party lines have nothing to do with it.

The thread, in one day

Before the writers, the readers. My Wednesday comment section ran the full range of evidentiary behavior in about twelve hours.

One commenter wrote that communism, socialism, Marxism, and fascism are all the same, and that any difference is cosmetic. That is the merge, performed live, in a thread about a memo instructing the merge.

Another commenter disagreed with him and provided definitions, drawing the line between key and all means of production. Then she said the memo was no big deal.

A third commenter, Rick Tilson, tested her definition against 1984 and asked whether Orwell’s state was therefore communist.

A fourth arrived with a careful, qualified historical argument about twentieth-century death tolls, and when I answered it, came back with nine names and the number 100 million.

And a fifth wrote his six words.

Five readers. Merge, correction, stress test, escalation, self-correction. None of us were paid. Nobody had an editor.

Hold that against what follows.

Finding one: the best evidence and the biggest word rarely appear together

Start with the writers whose work I could check.

Judd Legum built a documentary record of who is financing immigration detention: a $450 million revolving credit line from Citizens to GEO Group; a $500 million CoreCivic bond underwriting; an AT&T contract with a dollar figure and a date; and detention population figures from January 2025 forward. Every number traceable. He does not use the word fascism. He does not use the word authoritarian. He builds the record and lets you connect the dots.

Radley Balko quotes the Minnesota Attorney General’s federal complaint, a DHS memo on warrantless home entries, and Judge Jeffrey Bryan’s Fourth Amendment ruling verbatim. The word appears once, as an adjective, buried inside the filings.

Marisa Kabas tracks $1.07 billion in facility purchases, discloses which of her FOIA requests are still pending, and reports a court finding that an environmental assessment was completed in about thirty minutes.

Ken Klippenstein publishes the leaked FBI and DHS bulletin, then fact-checks the document he just leaked, noting that the casualties it references were not who it implies. He mostly avoids the word too.

Joyce Vance is a former United States Attorney. She writes about a nine-to-nothing Supreme Court ruling, a Justice Department indictment, and Kevin Roberts on the record. Across the piece, she uses autocracy and autocrat. She never once writes fascism. A former federal prosecutor choosing the narrower word is not an accident.

Anne Applebaum rejects the label outright on conceptual grounds and offers a replacement: autocratic state capture.

Now the other column.

Will Stancil writes that Trump and Musk are openly breaking dozens of laws. He names none of them. The piece carries no links, no documents, no data.

Lucian Truscott IV states as fact that half a billion dollars from Venezuelan oil was deposited into a Qatari account. That is a specific, checkable, serious claim, and it is offered on his say-so.

Steve Schmidt published a piece whose entire argument is that we must call the thing by its name. The piece does not define the name.

Mike Brock concludes that Stephen Miller is a fascist. He paraphrases Miller throughout. He does not quote him once.

The same failure runs on the right. Matt Taibbi and Walter Kirn treat the fascism alarm as a recurring elite panic and support the claim with a podcast conversation about a single video. No data, no documents, no historians.

I want to be exact about what I am saying. I am not saying the well-sourced writers are right and the others are wrong. Legum may be too cautious. Stancil may be describing something real. I am saying that one column hands you the means to check it and the other asks you to just take it.

Finding two: four writers who set their own control group

Cross-writer comparisons invite the charge of cherry-picking. These do not, because in each case the control is the writer’s own prior work.

Timothy Snyder. In October 2024, he quotes Robert Paxton’s definition verbatim and cites Zeev Sternhell, Jason Stanley, and Tony Judt. I call that scholarship.

In February 2026, he argues that Trump is failing at fascism because fascism demands a major foreign war. Zero citations. In July 2026 he published a piece titled “What is Fascism?” that cites nobody in the body, listing two books afterward without engaging either. A piece with that title, from that author, that does not engage Paxton, Griffin, Payne, Eco, or Arendt?

In June 2026, he argues that a proposed military budget increase is a bribe to the officer corps. He cites the Guardian, the Times, another Substack, and four of his own prior posts. He does not cite the budget.

The standard fell as the publishing rate rose. I think that observation is extremely important.

Mike Brock. His August 3 piece on OpenAI quotes named executives directly and links TechCrunch, Fortune, the BBC, Reuters, NPR, and the Guardian. His piece calling a senior White House official a fascist quotes no one. Same writer, same month. He applies a higher evidentiary standard to a technology company than to the presidency.

Robert Reich. His close reading of the FCC-mandated CBS agreement is excellent work: he shows that the agreement never defines bias, never says whose complaints trigger action, never enumerates what other concerns mean. That is a writer reading a document. His piece asking whether Trump is a fascist answers in a word, yes, and cites no scholar of fascism at all.

Ruth Ben-Ghiat. Her essays carry named decisions, a Senate Finance Committee letter, House Oversight material, and the Solicitor General quoted from argument. Her conversation transcripts assert checkable claims about policy change with nothing behind them. The format changed. The standard changed with it.

Finding three: three things we need to do better

Nobody reads the memo. I audited twenty-four pieces arguing the communism fight. Not one engages the co/efficient document. It is the only artifact in this entire argument with a published sample size, field dates, and a margin of error. The people fighting about it have not opened it. I will keep my eye on it. Is the document a fake? A nothing burger?

Nobody engages the disagreement among scholars. Robert Paxton reversed his position in January 2021 and said the invasion of the Capitol removed his objection to the label. Almost every writer who wants the word cites that reversal. In the same 2024 interview in which he confirmed the definition fits, Paxton also said the word generates more heat than light and that he is not pushing it. Both halves are his. I found no Substack piece carrying the second half. But I could have missed it.

Worse: Roger Griffin defined generic fascism as palingenetic ultranationalism, the most-cited definition in the field, and he refuses to apply it to Trump. He told NPR in October 2024 there is no evidence of a coherent enough ideology, and he argues the danger is worse than fascism precisely because it can sit inside a democracy. Across all 76 pieces I read, I found zero engagement with Griffin. The single strongest objection to the label is absent from the conversation about the label.

Rutger Bregman is the one writer who argues the definition from the literature, citing Paxton’s Anatomy, the 1998 Journal of Modern History article, and Eco’s “Ur-Fascism” by venue. Even he does not carry Paxton’s hesitation.

Nobody answers the strongest version of the other side. Not a single defense piece addresses the atrocity argument on its merits. They answer the label or the motive. The hardest form of the charge goes unanswered.

Finding four: where the number lives now

Here is the finding that sent me back to my own comment section on Facebook.

The figure of 100 million deaths comes from The Black Book of Communism, published in 1997. Across twenty-four right-side pieces making the communism argument, that number appears exactly once, in a single August 2026 post, unqualified. Taibbi does not use it. Andrew Sullivan does not. Garry Kasparov does not. Rod Dreher does not. Christopher Rufo does not.

A commenter on my Wednesday post used it twice in eleven days.

The number has migrated. It left the writers and moved into the comment sections, and the argument about it did not travel along. Two of the book’s own contributing authors, Nicolas Werth and Jean-Louis Margolin, publicly broke with the editor over that aggregation in Le Monde in November 1997, at publication. Werth wrote the Soviet chapter that supplies most of the deaths. Neither the writers who use the figure nor those who answer it mention that.

This is what happens when a number outruns its sourcing. It arrives in a Facebook thread stripped of every qualification its own authors demanded, and the person repeating it has no way to know.

Finding five: the symmetry is real where you’d least expect, and false where it counts

I have to give ground here, because two writers did the work and their findings complicate what I would have said a week ago.

Chad Maschke audited 122,106 original congressional posts between January 26 and April 26 of this year, using a party-blind classifier with a second human validation pass. Democrats apply totalitarian-regime labels to Republicans at 0.055 per hundred posts. Republicans apply them to Democrats at 0.062. His conclusion, and I am quoting it because it is against my prior: the labeling is a tie. His argued asymmetry sits elsewhere, in eliminationist language rather than epithets.

Lindsey Cormack runs DCinbox, an archive of official congressional e-newsletters. Over roughly fifteen years, Republicans used “fascist” 53 times and Democrats 20. Her finding is that the accusation belongs to neither party. It surfaces when the opposition holds the White House.

So on frequency, the two sides are close to even. Anyone telling you only one side does this is not counting.

The asymmetry lives in three other places, and each one is a document that can be checked.

One side has a written instruction to merge its three words so the alarm transfers. I read it and quoted it on Wednesday. I searched for a counterpart on the other side and did not find one. Absence of a leak is not proof of absence, and the co/efficient memo leaked in four days, which tells you the pipeline works.

The other side’s own research shops have told it repeatedly to stop. Its 2024 general-election modeling ranked the fascism message far below its Medicare message on moving voters. Its 2025 research called authoritarianism messaging unconvincing. Its party committee’s late-2025 strategy memo went economic. Reporting from NOTUS in September 2025 shows Republicans making Democratic use of the word into the issue itself.

And then the third thing, which is not about rhetoric at all.

The word with a task force

The label currently attached to federal machinery is not fascist. It is anti-fascist.

Calling a president a fascist carries no consequence from the government. Being identified as anti-fascist can now put you inside a counterterrorism apparatus.

I am not the first to say this, and I am not going to pretend otherwise. Faiza Patel of the Brennan Center made the point on October 9, 2025, with the designation order and NSPM-7 quoted directly, and her formulation is better than mine: the antifascist label can be attached to almost anyone, and the flexibility is the point. Forrest Brown named the irony in November.

The record since: NSPM-7 names anti-capitalism among its indicators and tasks the Joint Terrorism Task Forces, Justice, Treasury, and the IRS. The 2026 counterterrorism strategy names anti-fascists as one of three major threat categories, and does not mention right-wing or white supremacist extremism at all. A July State Department report names the Democratic Socialists of America and the National Lawyers Guild.

I am flagging that last section as mine. The memo I wrote about on Wednesday says nothing about enforcement. The connection is my analysis, and you should weigh it as analysis.

What the reader did

Which brings me back to six words.

He read a correction addressed to the whole thread, recognized himself in it, and wrote that he was lazy and would be better. He did not argue. He did not reframe. He did not explain that he had meant something more defensible. He did not go quiet and reappear two days later with a hypothetical.

I have now read 76 pieces by people who write about this for a living, several of them with audiences a hundred times the size of mine. I did not find that sentence once.

The invitation

This is the part where a piece like this usually ends by feeling superior. I would rather it end by being useful, so I am going to ask instead.

To the writers named above. Send the receipts. Not a retraction and not an apology. A link. If there is a source for the claim that fascism requires a foreign war, send it, and I will run it. If there is documentation for the five hundred million dollars in a Qatari account, send it and I will run it. If Stephen Miller said the thing, send the quote and I will run it. Corrections and sources get published in full, at the top of the next Binding, under your own name, without commentary from me.

I am asking in good faith because I think most of this is a genre problem rather than a character problem. Snyder in 2024 met the standard. Reich meets it. Ben-Ghiat meets it in her essays. The standard is achievable by every writer on this list, because every writer on this list has already met it. What changed is cadence, and cadence is a choice. (I recognize my own limitations here.)

To my own readers, including the ones who disagreed with me on Wednesday. Apply this to me. I told you the memo was real and gave you its dates, its sample, and its margin of error. I told you which section was my analysis rather than the document’s. Hold Friday to the same rule you hold Wednesday.

And to everyone. The next time a piece tells you something is fascism or communism, ask it three questions. Which meaning? By what criteria? What would change the writer’s mind? If a piece cannot answer all three, it is asking for your alarm and offering you nothing concrete.

A note on method. I read 76 pieces across three sweeps: writers applying the fascist label, writers rejecting it, and writers arguing the communist and socialist labels. I graded each on whether a reader could check it. Substack’s own search is closed to automated tools, so everything here came through general web search, which means there is certainly good work on both sides that I did not surface. If yours is in that gap, send it. I would rather be corrected than uninformed.

Last Thursday I published a piece about 113 comments under the Orange County Register’s post on the fiftieth State of Black America. Not one of them referred to anything in the report. I called that contempt, and I stand on it.

Then I went looking for the people who did open it. A complaint about readers is cheap if you cannot name the readers who showed up.

The Associated Press story by Matt Brown ran in Fortune, the Philadelphia Inquirer, PBS NewsHour, NBC News, the Baltimore Sun, and dozens of local papers. I read it against the executive summary and counted the figures it carries from the report. Zero. That makes the week’s test easy. Any outlet publishing a number went past the wire.

Two did. I found no opinion column and no editorial board anywhere that engaged the document. I found no conservative or libertarian outlet that engaged it either, which is a change rather than a policy: Fox News covered the 2025 edition on July 25 last year, with a byline. This year the administration’s press shop supplied the entire right-of-center response.

The question: who opened it, and what did they find that the wire left out?

This week’s picks

1. Antonio Mattox Jr., “Urban League report: As Black men lose jobs, Marc Morial blasts EEOC,” UATL, July 30, 2026.

Mattox writes under an Ida B. Wells Society line at UATL, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s Black culture desk. He did the thing nobody else did. Morial called the EEOC an embarrassment at the rollout, and Mattox picked up the phone and asked the EEOC to answer the charge.

It answered: “The agency is committed to ensuring a colorblind, merit-based, and evenhanded enforcement of the law … and to protecting workers of every race and both sexes, based on the merits of their claims.”

That statement appears in no other coverage I could find. Read it beside Morial’s line in the same piece: “The EEOC has become an embarrassment to America. The EEOC is refusing to do its job.”

The caboose is here too, and it is nowhere in the wire. Morial: “African Americans are like a caboose on a train. The train speeds up, the condition of Black Americans improves, but remains behind that of whites because they speed up as well.” Fifty years of a report in one mental image.

2. Ashleigh Fields, “Black Americans’ prospects worse under Trump administration: National Urban League,” The Hill, July 30, 2026, 3:08 p.m. ET.

The AP got the adjectives. Fields got two agencies and a footnote.

She quotes the report’s own hardest passage, which no wire reader has seen: “When the Secretary of the Department of War blatantly refuses to promote Black military leaders, fires them discriminately, and goes as far as to refuse to have them photographed with the sitting President, there can be no other explanation than racism.” She went to the Justice Department for a response and got one, from a spokesperson defending the Civil Rights Division under Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon: the division enforces the law “evenhandedly for all Americans,” and “preferential treatment on the basis of race has no place in our society.”

White House spokeswoman Allison Schuster supplied the position. A White House official supplied the arithmetic, and Fields did the thing that makes this pick: she linked the official’s source.

Between Mattox and Fields, three federal agencies answered on the record. Neither reporter got there by running the wire.

3. Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies, “May 2026 Jobs Day Analysis,” June 5, 2026.

This is the document the White House official cited, and following the link is where the week turned for me.

The Joint Center is the oldest Black-led think tank in the country. Its May analysis is the source of the administration’s number: Black employment rose by 101,000 between April and May 2026. I checked it against BLS series LNS12000006, which puts Black employment at 20,442,000 in April and 20,543,000 in May. The difference is 101,000, exactly. The official’s number is real and it came from a Black research institution’s own work.

Two things sit in that same analysis and did not travel with the number.

The Joint Center reports the Black unemployment rate falling from 7.3 percent to 6.6 percent. That is 0.7 points. The White House official told The Hill the rate “fell 0.6 percentage points in May.”

And a few lines down: Black unemployment was 6.0 percent in May 2025 and 6.6 percent in May 2026. Higher than a year ago, and, in the Joint Center’s words, still “the highest among the major racial groups.”

The month improved. The year did not. The official quoted the month.

I wrote three days ago that a columnist “had the rankings and left out the armed guards,” and that this is a curation choice rather than a factual error. Here is the same strategy, from a different direction, inside a document anyone could have opened by clicking the link The Hill already provided. I did not expect to find it while writing this Binding, and I am putting it in the third slot because it is the strongest thing the week produced.

4. Valerie Wilson, “A snapshot of Black employment trends under Trump 2.0,” Economic Policy Institute, May 4, 2026.

Wilson directs EPI’s Program on Race, Ethnicity, and the Economy. Before that, she was an economist at the National Urban League’s own Policy Institute. She published this three months before the report, and it is the closest thing that exists to a methodological check on the report’s headline number.

The executive summary says: “Between November 2025 and February 2026, approximately 567,000 Black men lost their jobs.” Wilson looks at the same series and refuses to run that comparison. Her reason, in her words: “shifts in the demographic composition of the population also resulted in larger than usual discontinuities in labor force measures by race, ethnicity, and gender between December 2025 and January 2026—which is why this analysis is focused on a comparison between the first quarters of 2025 and 2026, when the population controls are the most up to date.”

She reaches the same direction the report reaches. Black men’s employment-population ratio fell from 60.5 percent to 58.8 percent between the first quarters of 2025 and 2026. She gets there on ground that is stable.

I flagged this figure last Thursday. Learning that a former Urban League economist had flagged it in public, in May, is the most useful thing this week’s reading gave me.

5. 2026 State of Black America: Is the American Dream Dead? National Urban League, July 30, 2026.

Fiftieth edition. Executive summary is a free PDF, no login, about fifteen minutes.

Morial wrote it with Senators Raphael Warnock, Angela Alsobrooks, and Lisa Blunt Rochester, Governor Wes Moore, and Mayors Jacob Frey and Brandon Scott. Three sections: Defeat Poverty, Defend Democracy, Demand Diversity.

The third section carries an argument overlooked by most. The report wants Black entrepreneurs positioned inside “the industrial revolutions underway in AI, clean energy, and biomedical technology,” and it puts the stakes plainly: “The next economy is being built today. Who builds it will determine who benefits from it for generations.”

It also names the reader’s job. “When Washington retreats, statehouses must advance.”

Agree or disagree. You cannot do either from the wire copy.

Executive summary PDF

The small install: read the wire against the document

Fifteen minutes, and it works on any report in any news cycle.

Count the numbers in the wire story. For the AP piece on this report, the count is zero. That tells you what several million people read: the existence of a report, plus quotes.

Open the document and find one figure the wire left out. Now you know something those readers do not.

Follow every link in the rebuttal. The Hill printed the White House’s source. Clicking it took me under a minute and produced the third pick above. Most rebuttals do not cite anything. When one does, that is insight.

Landing

I broke two of this report’s numbers last Thursday, and the executive summary confirms both readings.

The Medicare line says “approximately $500 billion in cuts from 2027–2034.” Congress wiped the PAYGO scorecard clean in November 2025, which killed the trigger. The Black women figure reads “250,000 to over 300,000 … with some estimates reaching 600,000.” The 600,000 has no traceable source I can find. And the $87 billion arrives as “These job losses cost Black America about $87 billion in lost income,” which attaches Algernon Austin’s CEPR figure to the 567,000. Austin measured one year, 2025, against a counterfactual where Black and white employment rates match. He drew no such chain.

The wealth gap holds. The homeownership gap holds. The Civil Rights Division holds. Callais holds.

So the week ends with a document that is mostly sound and partly stale, a White House that answered it with a Black think tank’s research and quoted the better month out of it, and an American press that ran a wire story carrying none of the numbers in dispute. Every one of those is a reading failure, and they are not the same size.

Two of the report’s mechanisms are voting mechanisms. Louisiana v. Callais narrowed Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act on April 29. The SAVE Act died in the Senate on June 4 by filibuster rather than by argument. The report’s own instruction is that statehouses advance when Washington retreats, and statehouses are down-ballot. Read the ballot the way you would read the report. Every race, every proposition. vote411.org

A question for the comments

Pick any story you read this week that summarized a report, a ruling, or a study. Open the source. Post one thing in it the story left out.

If you open it and the story got it right, post that too. That result counts, and hardly anybody publishes it.

One thing I wrote

Last Thursday, “How Exactly?” — 113 comments in about four hours under the Register’s post, none referring to anything in the report. I answered the mechanism in four paragraphs from the Court’s own opinion, the Justice Department’s own published mission statements, and federal employment data. Then I broke two of the Urban League’s numbers in the same essay.

I wrote that piece angry at a comment section. A week of reading widened the charge.

That comment sits a few slots below this one:

“Did they bother to say how? Or just orange man bad?”

This was from the same thread, this evening. The Orange County Register posted the Associated Press story on the National Urban League’s fiftieth State of Black America report, and the readers produced 113 comments in about four hours.

I read each and every one of them before I wrote anything.

I determined that not a single comment refers to anything in the report.

Nothing about the Justice Department. Nothing about the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. And nothing about Louisiana v. Callais, decided in April, which gutted the operating standard of the Voting Rights Act. Not the SAVE Act, which the AP story names by title. Nothing about homeownership, unemployment, the federal workforce, one figure, one page, or one line of the report.

However, six people demanded to know the mechanism. Roughly ten declared the report false outright.

Call it what it is

Marc Morial served as mayor of New Orleans for eight years and as a Louisiana state senator before that. A commenter called him “fat Albert.”

Really?

Another wrote “Black fatigue.”

The fatigue is all mine, pal.

Another reproduced a racial slur in full, presenting it as a historical quotation.

Another wrote that Africans and Muslims sold their own into slavery, under a post about federal civil rights enforcement in 2026.

Yeah, they wrote that.

Several wrote versions of the same sentence. Blacks do it to themselves; they hinder themselves; they have fatherless families. Then there was the black-on-black violence. Or, and the entitled mindset.

You can not claim these are edgy jokes, and they are also not political disagreement. They are the thing the report describes, posted in the comment section beneath a story about the report, by people who did not read it (ridiculous). The Orange County Register published an article asking whether Black Americans face structural barriers to advancement. Its own readers answered the question in four hours, in public, under the paper’s masthead, with no moderator anywhere in sight.

This is also not ignorance

I want to be precise about what happened here, because the polite word for it is wrong.

Ignorance is not knowing. Ignorance is forgivable, and it is fixable, and it describes a condition rather than a choice.

Every one of these people had the document one click away. The Register put the link in the post. The AP story names the mechanism in its fifth paragraph. The full report and its executive summary sit on a public website with no paywall and no login. Reading the executive summary takes about fifteen minutes.

They chose the comment box.

Capacity failure? No, that behavior is contempt, and contempt is a decision. Somebody decided the document was not worth fifteen minutes and the comment was worth typing anyway. Somebody decided that demanding evidence and refusing to look at evidence could be the same act. Six people performed a standard of proof they had no intention of applying to themselves.

I spent twenty-three years in an institution that will not let you argue about an operation until you have read the order. Disagree with the order all you want. Skip it, and you are not in the conversation. That rule exists because people who argue about documents they have not read get other people hurt.

The mechanism

The Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division lost roughly 250 attorneys between January and the end of May 2025, about 70 percent of its lawyers. Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon described her goal as turning “the train around and driving it in the opposite direction.” The division’s published mission statements now include protecting children from chemical and surgical mutilation, keeping men out of women’s sports, and eradicating anti-Christian bias. Voting, education, and special litigation took the heaviest losses. Senator Peter Welch requested oversight hearings in April 2025 and again in October.

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission lost its quorum in January 2025 when two commissioners were fired. It could not issue guidance or approve major litigation until the Senate confirmed a third member in October. Andrea Lucas became chair on November 5. The commission has since deprioritized disparate impact claims and taken the position that disparate impact suits are unconstitutional.

Hold that one, because the thread gets it exactly backward. No court has held that diversity programs violate the Fourteenth Amendment. Students for Fair Admissions, Croson, Adarand, and Parents Involved addressed race-conscious college admissions, government contracting set-asides, and K-12 school assignment. An agency adopting an enforcement posture is not a court issuing a holding. Anyone who tells you different should be asked which case, which practice, which ruling, and should be expected to answer.

Louisiana v. Callais was decided April 29 of this year, six to three, Justice Alito writing. Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act now requires evidence supporting a strong inference that a state intentionally drew districts to give minority voters less opportunity because of race. Section 2 operated as an effects test for sixty years. It is now close to an intent test, with a partisan-motive defense available to any state that wants it. Districts drawn to comply with Section 2 are now exposed to challenge as racial gerrymanders. Alabama is moving on two majority-Black Senate districts. Mississippi is redrawing its Supreme Court districts.

The federal workforce shrank by 271,825 employees between September 2024 and January 2026, a 12 percent contraction. Black Americans held roughly 19 percent of federal jobs while making up 14 percent of the population. Black women lost 95,371 of those positions in 2025, about a third of the total. Among Black women with bachelor’s degrees, labor force participation fell 3.5 points in one year.

Four claims. Every one verifiable from the Supreme Court’s own opinion, the Justice Department’s own website, and federal employment data. None of them require anyone to trust the Urban League about anything.

That took me an afternoon. It was available to all 113 of them.

Now the part that costs me something

I checked the Urban League’s numbers too. Two of them fail, and I am going to say so in the same piece where I defend the rest, because that is what checking means.

The report says the reconciliation law triggers roughly $500 billion in Medicare cuts from 2027 to 2034. The Congressional Budget Office did produce that estimate under statutory pay-as-you-go rules. Congress then wiped the $3.4 trillion PAYGO scorecard clean in the November 2025 law that ended the shutdown, which killed the trigger. A report published on July 30, 2026, states a canceled contingency in the present tense. That is eight months stale, and somebody should have caught it.

The report says 567,000 Black men lost jobs between November 2025 and February 2026. The arithmetic replicates from the Bureau of Labor Statistics series. Nearly all of it is a measurement artifact. BLS delayed its annual population control adjustment and folded it into the February 2026 release, which cut the measured employment level by about 1.4 million, and the agency warned against comparing February figures with earlier months. The December-to-January move alone accounts for 536,000 of the drop. There is also no October 2025 household survey, because of the shutdown, so the series has a hole immediately before the window opens.

The $87 billion in lost income paired with that number comes from the Center for Economic and Policy Research and measures something else: the annual cost of the employment gap across all Black workers in 2025. Setting the two figures side by side implies a causal chain CEPR never drew.

The claim that anti-diversity policy cost between 250,000 and 600,000 Black women their jobs in 2025 has an upper bound with no traceable source. The Institute for Women’s Policy Research found a net loss of 113,000. The Economic Policy Institute found the steepest one-year drop in Black women’s employment rate in 25 years, attributed the college-graduate losses mainly to federal layoffs, and stated plainly that why the damage concentrated on Black women remains an open question.

The wealth gap holds. The homeownership gap holds. The Civil Rights Division holds, the EEOC holds, Callais holds, the federal workforce numbers hold. The Medicare figure does not. The 567,000 does not.

Advocacy that cannot survive a fact-check hands Todd Udell a win he never has to read anything to collect.

Notice what I just did, though. I spent four paragraphs holding the organization I am defending to a standard, in public, in the same essay. Not one person in that comment section held anyone to anything, including themselves.

The ladder

The thread climbs, and each rung requires less knowledge of the document than the one below it.

Demand evidence without reading. Six comments. Then deny with no argument at all: fake news, a total lie, another lie, more liberal lies, no because it’s not true. Then attack the funding. “Just go see who Funds the Urban League... duh.” Then swap in a different cause, which is where the fatherless families and the entitled mindset arrive, relocating the argument to ground where the Civil Rights Division has nothing to say. Then reverse the charge: race hustlers, race baiters, “these clowns are the racist,” “the lying racists continue to promote hate and division.” Then attack the paper for printing it. Then cancel the subscription.

By the top of the ladder, the report has disappeared, and the argument is about whether a newspaper should have carried a wire story. Nobody needs to know what the story said to have that argument. That is the entire appeal.

Two commenters called the report a new narrative. The first State of Black America came out in 1976, written because Gerald Ford’s State of the Union and the Democratic response both skipped Black economic conditions. The New York Times called it “a profoundly depressing document.” Jimmy Carter adopted several of its recommendations after winning that November. The AP story gives that history four paragraphs.

They called a fifty-year-old annual publication new. The correction was one click away. Nobody took the click.

Two quotes, both broken

A commenter quoted Lyndon Johnson, reproducing a racial slur in full, on having Black Americans “voting Democrat for the next 200 years.” That line traces to exactly one source: Ronald Kessler’s 1995 book Inside the White House. Kessler got it from Robert MacMillan, an Air Force One steward, who said he overheard Johnson say it to two governors around the time of the 1964 Civil Rights Act. MacMillan was recalling the moment more than thirty years later. No contemporaneous record exists. Snopes rates it unproven.

Somebody published a slur in a public forum, under a newspaper’s name, on the strength of one man’s decades-old recollection. He did not check. He was not going to check. Checking was never part of it.

Two commenters invoked Charles Barkley. Barkley did say something close. On Michael Smerconish’s show in September 2019 he said Democrats “have been taking black people’s votes” and “only talk to black people every four years,” doing nothing in between. In the same stretch he said, “Neither one of these parties is doing a thing for poor people,” and that Republicans do not talk to Black voters at all.

They kept the half that indicts Democrats. One version had Barkley laughing at the idea that white people are to blame for everything that happens to Black Americans, which he never said, and which required inventing a claim about white people so it could be knocked down. The report names federal agencies and a Supreme Court decision. It names no race of person anywhere.

The subscriber

The longest comment came from a reader announcing she would cancel. It contains one accurate grievance wrapped around a demand that would end journalism.

The grievance: “I understand that you let go a lot of the local writers and now we’re looking at articles from people who don’t even live in this state.” She is right about that. MediaNews Group has cut Southern California newsroom staff repeatedly, and the Register runs far more wire copy than it did ten years ago. She is a paying customer describing a product that got worse.

The demand: “Just reflect the readership. Stop trying to put your thumb on the scale. It’s no longer true journalism when they do that. It’s propaganda.”

The story she is describing is an Associated Press report by Matt Brown that summarizes a document, quotes the organization that produced it, and quotes White House spokesperson Allison Schuster rebutting it at length. That is the standard construction, executed correctly.

Her position is that reporting the existence of a report is bias, and that the cure is for a newspaper to mirror its audience back to itself. She invoked a traditional journalism background while making that argument. Reflecting the readership is the one thing that background teaches you never to do.

She wants more local reporters and less reporting she disagrees with. Alden Global Capital gave her the first problem. She aimed at the Associated Press.

What this actually is

Two of the four answers above are voting cases. Callais narrowed the Voting Rights Act in April. The SAVE Act would require documentary proof of citizenship to register, and it died in the Senate on June 4 by filibuster rather than by argument. Both will be settled by people who know what is on their ballot, in state legislative races and local ones, where the redistricting actually happens.

The 1976 report changed federal policy because a man running for president read it during an election year. That is the whole mechanism, and it has never been more complicated than that.

Somebody read the document.

One hundred thirteen people had the chance yesterday. Six of them demanded the evidence out loud. The rest called it a lie, or called the organization a hustle, or called a former mayor fat Albert, or typed a slur and hit post.

Presidents’ Day, February 16, 2026. Judge Cynthia M. Rufe ordered the National Park Service to put the panels back at Sixth and Market. The judge wrote forty pages. The administration’s argument, she wrote, was “dangerous” and “horrifying.” She invoked the Ministry of Truth in Orwell’s 1984. The next morning, I published an essay “Version Control for Democracy in a Ghost-Map Age.” I found Michele Norris’s Substack post the same day titled “Say Their Names.” It is crazy to think that two writers on the same platform on the same day, using the same word to explain what was going on: restore.

Wednesday night, July 15, 2026, a work crew was dispatched to the site with a different set of panels for Sixth and Market. The panels had been “manufactured,” an Assistant U.S. Attorney told the Third Circuit on July 2. The court cleared its mandate on July 3. The installation finished before sunrise on July 15. It was done “under cover of darkness,” according to Mayor Cherelle Parker’s office.

All nine names are still there; however, the story around them was rewritten.

2. Michele Norris, “THE REWIND: Say Their Names,” The Race Card Project on Substack, February 17, 2026.

Norris founded The Race Card Project in 2010 to collect six-word stories about race from ordinary people. Her Substack post landed the day after Judge Rufe’s Presidents’ Day injunction. Her argument: naming enslaved people in public history is what keeps them from being enslaved a second time by omission. She wrote it in February about the removal. The Third Circuit’s June 18 opinion vacated the injunction that made her sentence true. Read Norris against the July 15 panels. Note what she asked for. 3. Heather Cox Richardson, “March 28, 2026,” Letters from an American.

Richardson maps the executive order the President’s House case runs on: “Restoring Truth and Sanity to American History,” signed March 27, 2025. She names the three-person review team, the museums flagged, and the phrase that governs every decision downstream — “improper ideology.” Sixteen months of setup landed at Sixth and Market on January 22 this year, at the National Museum of African American History and Culture in the July 4 DPC report, and on the war.gov Charles Rogers page between March 20 and April 5 of last year. 5. Erica Armstrong Dunbar, Never Caught: The Washingtons’ Relentless Pursuit of Their Runaway Slave, Ona Judge. Atria Books, 2017.

Ona Judge escaped from the President’s House on May 21, 1796. She lived free in New Hampshire for the next fifty-two years and refused the manumission Washington’s estate later offered, because acceptance would have recognized his family’s ownership of her. Her footsteps are cast in the pavement at the site. Dunbar’s book is why. Dunbar is the Charles and Mary Beard Professor of History at Rutgers and a MacArthur Fellow. Read the book this weekend. The small install: a three-step audit

When an institution you track announces a restoration, log three things the same day.

The announcement date.

A capture of the original including the date: Wayback Machine, archive.today, a photograph you took, a screenshot with a visible timestamp.

Set a reminder thirty days out to compare again.

The quiet change depends on nobody coming back. The Rogers page went unnoticed for fifteen months because we did not come back to check. The President’s House panels are the same mechanism playing out live. We need to keep the watch.

Landing

The court order was the legal command to restore. The Third Circuit called it invalid on June 18. The overnight installation on July 15 was the final commit. Version control for democracy describes what a citizen does when the institutional substrate becomes editable in the middle of the night.

The FBI stood up an NSPM-7 Joint Mission Center. Its job is to flag people whose beliefs match a list — anti-American, anti-capitalist, anti-Christian, opposition to traditional views on family and religion. The trigger is what people think. The center integrates intelligence, operational support, and financial analysis. Klippenstein has been on this since September, when NSPM-7 first appeared. 2. The language on paper

Democracy Now!, interview with Ken Klippenstein. December 8, 2025.

A leaked DOJ implementation memo defined the targets. Each criterion is a belief. “Anti-American, anti-capitalist or anti-Christian.” “Opposition to law and immigration enforcement.” Support for “radical gender ideology.” “Hostility towards traditional views on family, religion, and morality.” NSPM-7 authorized the Treasury Department to audit nonprofit taxes for foreign-financing evidence, told the FBI to review five years of past intelligence records, and set up a citizen reporting system. Jason Blazakis ran the State Department’s FTO designation office through the Obama and first Trump administrations. He was asked whether the four European groups the State Department just designated — Antifa Ost in Germany, Informal Anarchist Federation in Italy, Armed Proletarian Justice and Revolutionary Class Self-Defense in Greece — met the standard. His answer: “These wouldn’t really typically merit an FTO designation because they hadn’t been responsible for fatalities yet.” Ten years at the office. Naming a category error.

4. What the allies said

Washington Post via The Spokesman-Review, “Rubio tries to enlist other nations in antifa fight, but some allies recoil.” July 9, 2026.

European diplomats speaking on condition of anonymity: “We don’t have antifa.” Another: their “law enforcement authorities have not focused on left-wing terrorism because this is not considered a high-priority threat.” The Netherlands declined to co-host a May planning meeting on the same topic. Thomas Renard of the International Centre for Counter-Terrorism, quoted the day of the ministerial, said counterterrorism “has been completely politicised, instrumentalised,” and that right-wing terrorism has “completely disappeared from the U.S. counterterrorism strategy.” When the allies are sending junior ministers to a foreign-policy summit, the message is legible.

5. The historical rhyme

Ken Klippenstein, “Leak: Rubio’s WMD Scandal Is ‘Far-Left Terrorism’.” July 15, 2026.

Klippenstein got the ministerial planning documents the day before Rubio took the podium. His line lands hardest: “A three-letter acronym for an imaginary threat that could be radioactive to a politician’s presidential ambitions. Sound familiar? It’s this generation’s WMD.” The FTO framework was built for al-Qaeda, ISIS, and Hamas. Groups with command structures, membership rolls, operational tempo. Applied to an ideology, it becomes the pretext. That is the shape of WMD.

Wayne Coy’s guest essay lands Monday. He asks a definitional question: what gets called violence, and what does not. He walks through three things that happened on the same July 4 weekend. The White House Domestic Policy Council report recommending loyalty labels at Smithsonian entrances. A Black woman on a DC Metro train surrounded by masked Patriot Front marchers carrying Confederate flags. Flock Safety cameras cut down across five states, after audits showed one city’s data had been searched 7,100 times for immigration enforcement in violation of that city’s own policy. The march got a police escort. The woman got her dismissed 2024 charges spread across the internet. The camera-cutters face felony charges and, in some jurisdictions, the label “domestic terrorist.” The company that scans 150 million vehicles a day without warrant gets a contract renewal. Wayne names the pattern: the definition of violence decides which acts require accountability and which get to keep running. Same mechanism the Binding traced today. Different scale.

The through-line, restated

If ideology becomes an FTO-eligible category, what stops the next administration from designating the ideology it opposes?

That is the question the next Congress will inherit, whether or not it takes it up.

Wednesday afternoon, my brother sent me a link. New York Times. Culture section. Headline: “Historians Reject White House’s Criticism of Smithsonian Museum.”

I already had a Facebook post cued up for Thursday morning (here). A portrait card of Lonnie G. Bunch III, three facts, one line about the 162-page report the White House Domestic Policy Council dropped on July 4. My frame was Bunch’s own answer: a memo about a 180-year mission and the Board of Regents who govern the institution.

The Times piece went one register deeper. The professional historians answered too. They spoke through their institutions.

The book on my desk

Alfred Korzybski, Manhood of Humanity (1921).

Korzybski coined the phrase “time-binding class of life” in this book. It has been on my desk since March 2025, when I started tracking the White House’s push on public history. Korzybski’s argument is simple. Animals live and die inside their generation. Humans do not. We pass the record forward, generation to generation, so the next group starts where the last one stood. Museums, professional associations, and archives are the mechanism. That mechanism is what the DPC report attacks. When the record-keeping breaks, the next generation inherits a map that does not match the terrain.

The guild answered

The Organization of American Historians is the largest professional body of U.S. history scholars in the country. On Monday, July 6, its board released a statement on the DPC report. Marc Stein, the OAH president, a professor at San Francisco State and the author of a 2026 history of the 1976 Bicentennial, sent a separate note to the Times. His line was the tightest thing said all week:

“Released on July 4, 2026, the 250th birthday of the U.S. Declaration of Independence, the report is a declaration of independence from history.”

The American Historical Association, more than 10,000 members strong, sent Sarah Weicksel, its executive director. She answered the method. Museum labels, she reminded reporters, should read at an eighth-grade level, and most visitors read no more than a brief label anyway. The DPC treats museum labels like textbook paragraphs. Weicksel names the confusion for what it is: a category error.

Updated yesterday morning. On July 9, the AHA published an escalation. In an updated statement, the Association wrote that the DPC report “attacks the independence of our National Museum of American History” and “severely limits whose experiences count as important to American history.” The AHA also linked the July 4 report to two earlier documents: the August 12, 2025 White House letter to the Secretary announcing a review of eight museums, and the March 27, 2025 executive order “Restoring Truth and Sanity to American History.” The AHA’s March 31, 2025 statement already carries 36 organizational signatures, from the Association for the Study of African American Life and History to PEN America to the Society of American Archivists. The July 9 update is the trailhead of a bigger coalition.

The receipt future readers get

If someone opens a search bar in 2036 and types “white house smithsonian july 4 2026,” here is what they find.

A 162-page report titled “Saving America’s Story.” A memo from the founding director of the National Museum of African American History and Culture defending the institution he built — the Washington Post published the full text on July 8. A July 6 statement from the professional body of U.S. history scholars naming the report as a partisan attack dressed as historical critique. A July 9 statement from the largest historical association in the country calling the report an attack on the Museum’s independence, backed by 36 organizations that already signed on to the AHA’s March 2025 defense. A national NPR wire pickup on July 9 running under the headline “Smithsonian chief emphasizes ‘accuracy and integrity.’”

The two primary sources side by side. The angle the news pieces underplay. Tisby is a historian of the Black church and a plain-spoken reader of what the DPC actually wrote. The report’s complaint that the museum understates Christianity’s “constructive role” in the nation’s founding says the quiet part out loud. Tisby names the mechanism. Once you can name a mechanism, you can answer it.

4. Heather Cox Richardson, “March 28, 2026.” Letters from an American.

The origin document. The July 4 report descended from the March 27, 2025 executive order “Restoring Truth and Sanity to American History.” Richardson tracks the order, the three-person review team assigned to run it, and what changed since. Sixteen months of setup landed on July 4. This piece maps the setup.

5. Lonnie G. Bunch III, A Fool’s Errand: Creating the National Museum of African American History and Culture in the Age of Bush, Obama, and Trump. Smithsonian Books, 2019.

The book behind the man. Bunch built the museum brick by brick and wrote the account of doing it. When a report tells the founding director what the museum should say, the founder’s own book is the receipt. His chapter on legitimacy reads like it was written for this week.

Wednesday’s Times piece did what a guild can do. It named the method. Thursday’s Facebook post did what a portrait can do. It named the man. Yesterday morning’s AHA update did what a coalition can do. It stacked the signatures.

I have been tracking this fight since March 27, 2025, the day President Trump signed “Restoring Truth and Sanity to American History.” I wrote about it that week in “Restoring Whose Truth?” and kept watching. The August 12, 2025 White House letter to the Secretary was the second beat. I was waiting for the administration to escalate. On July 4, 2026, it did. What I did not expect was the speed and clarity of the guilds’ answer within 48 hours. The Marine Corps taught me the same lesson every after-action review teaches: whoever writes the record wins the future.
